The vision of Akash Christian Society is to reach the unreached and serve as a model to the greater Pakistani Church so that they too will be challenged to realize their role in the fulfilment of the great commission.
AKASH's primary project is Kunhar Christian Hospital which is named after the Kunhar river that runs the length of the Kaghan Valley in northern Pakistan. KCH has been serving the people of the valley for the past 25 years.
KCH has enjoyed years of good will, the trust of the local Hazara people and the authorities. A good Christian testimony has been developed and established over the years, with great emphasis placed on maintaining this testimony in the years to come.
The ministry started in a small clinic in a rented building and has now grown to a small 20 bed hospital situated in it's own compound. The hospital strives to provide affordable quality medical treatment to the local community.
International Christian medical professionals and other volunteers have played a crucial part in the efforts of AKASH in reaching out to both the majority community and the Pakistani church.
Kunhar Christian Hospital (KCH) has a busy outpatient department that is serving the local people from the surrounding areas. The hospital strives to provide affordable medical treatment in the areas of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases. There is a special focus on Obstetrics and Gynecology with many of the outpatients being antenatal patients. The women are encouraged to come for regular antenatal check ups and over the years KCH has contributed significantly to the declining maternal mortality rate in the valley.
TB treatment is provided to patients in partnership with the government programme, with records being maintained and emphasis on follow up. Many patients come for infertility treatment and there have been many successful cases. Patients are also encouraged and advised regarding family planning.
The hospital has a 20 bed capacity, with male and female wards as well as four private rooms. The labor and delivery rooms are well equipped and the midwives are well trained. Annually 250 deliveries are performed at the hospital,
with a large number of them being our regular antenatal patients. A surgical facility is available and has been widely used; the main usage being for C-sections, often then with the use of spinal anaesthesia.
The nursery has two incubators as well as nurses trained to provide basic neonatal care. The hospital has ultrasound machines along with an x-ray machine and trained technicians. The lab is able to carry out all the basic tests, and there is a well stocked pharmacy that provides all the necessary medicines.
KCH runs several training programs alongside all the medical work. Students for Nurse Aide training, Midwifery and Lab training are accepted every year. The students are trained in their respective fields with regular assessments taking place. The classes are taught by different people available at the time. Along with this, trainees are encouraged to take Bible classes and to complete the course from the Open Theological Seminary during their time here.
